Companionship Care vs. Personal Care: What's the Difference?
When families start exploring in-home care options, one of the first questions that comes up is: what kind of care does my loved one actually need? Two of the most common types are companionship care and personal care — and while they often overlap, they serve different purposes.
What is companionship care?
Companionship care focuses on social and emotional support. A companion caregiver provides regular, meaningful interaction — conversation, shared activities, outings, and a consistent friendly presence. This type of care is especially valuable for seniors who live alone, have limited social contact, or are at risk of isolation and depression.
Companionship care typically includes:
- Conversation and social engagement
- Accompanying to appointments or errands
- Light activities like puzzles, reading, or walks
- Meal preparation and light housekeeping
- Medication reminders
Companionship care does not include hands-on physical assistance with bathing, dressing, or other personal hygiene tasks.
What is personal care?
Personal care — sometimes called hands-on care or ADL assistance — involves direct physical support with tasks that require touching or close assistance. This type of care is appropriate when a senior needs help with their body, not just their day.
Personal care typically includes:
- Bathing and showering assistance
- Dressing and grooming
- Toileting and incontinence care
- Mobility assistance and transfers
- Skin care and positioning
Which type of care does my loved one need?
Many clients receive both types of care — a caregiver who provides companionship throughout the day while also assisting with personal hygiene in the morning. The right combination depends on your loved one's specific needs, health status, and preferences.
A good rule of thumb: if your loved one primarily needs company, engagement, and help around the house, companionship care may be sufficient. If they need physical assistance with bathing, dressing, or mobility, personal care is the right fit.
